Vania King reaches the Grand Slam third round!
« Back to the News PageVania King, who was still unsure if she wanted to play tennis not so long ago, reaches the Grand Slam third round today for the first time.
As a 17 year old, Vania won her first WTA title in 2006 and reached #50 spot of the WTA ranking, but seriously struggled to find the needed self-motivation in 2 years to follow.
During the last off-season, the 20 year old started working with Tarik Benhabiles and his team at Tarik’s academy in South Florida. Surrounded by players working towards similar goals, King finally found that drive to start winning. With a number of wins over top 20 players this year, Vania King upset No. 15 seed Samantha Stosur 7-5, 6-4 in 2 hours and 14 minutes today.She now awaits her first third round match at a Grand Slam in singles.
“I wouldn’t want to think of this as one specific match or tournament. I think it’s a work in progress, and it’s the work of the whole year that’s come to this point. I will try my best to make sure it’s going to continue in the future.”
