About Tarik Benhabiles
Born on February 5 of 1965 in Algeria and raised in France, Tarik picked up a tennis racket only just before he turned 10. Despite the late start he quickly revealed impressive talent and fighter-spirit that later helped him win the junior French Open title. As a professional Tarik Benhabiles earned the right to represent his country in the Davis Cup and ultimately reached #22 in the ATP rankings.
After retiring from the tour in 1992, Tarik turned his efforts to coaching. He has since worked for the French Tennis Federation and coached many of the world’s top ATP and WTA tennis players. Tarik met Andy Roddick at the age of 16 and turned him into the #6 player in the world, developing a strong relationship with Andy and winning many major ITF and ATP trophies along the way. Another one Tarik’s players, Benjamin Becker, defeated Andre Agassi during the third round of the 2006 U.S. Open, in Agassi’s final professional match and later engraved himself in the history of the game by becoming the fastest ATP ranking climber.
Tarik picked Benjamin fresh out of college and guided him from #1400 to #56 in less than a year. Ivo Karlovic improved his overall game and confidence so much while working with Tarik that he broke the top 50 for the first time in his career. Other professional players coached by Tarik include Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils, Karim Alami, Nicolas Escude, Alex Calatrava, Tatiana Golovin, Peng Shuai and Derrick Rostagno.
In 2009, Tarik decided to take up yet another challenge of the tennis world and joined L’Academie de Tennis as the Director of Tennis.
He can now be seen daily on the courts of the Indian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida passing on his tennis knowledge and igniting future international tennis stars.
Tarik is rightfully considered to be one of the best coaches in tennis with a high reputation amongst his peers. A perfectionist, an artist and a proven winner, Tarik utilizes his combination of tennis skills, knowledge and experience to offer his players superior coaching and mentoring.
"I think I would still be in college if it wasn't for Tarik. I owe a lot of my success to him. Tarik was the first one with a serious face to say, “You can be a champion!” and he has been a huge influence on my life, not only on the tennis court but off it too."
Andy Roddick
"Tarik Benhabiles is a small player with a big brain who got Andy to the big game."
The New York Times
"I was very impressed with his accomplishments not only as a player on tour, but the champions he has developed. Well, and I was right - he took me fresh out of college and into the ATP top 50 all in around a year !"
Benjamin Becker
"I'm not sure if it's happened before but I don't think I've ever been at a tournament this late where so many of the players had a coach in common (Legg Mason Tennis Classic's 2007). It shows how good of a coach Tarik is."
